Iran; Second day of nationwide strikes by merchants

For the second consecutive day, merchants in several Iranian cities are on strike

For the second consecutive day, merchants in several Iranian cities went on strike and refused to open for business in protest to increasing prices, inflation, poverty and other economic grievances that stem from the regime’s corruption. Yesterday, the merchants’ strikes spread to more than 50 cities and 21 provinces Iran.

On the second day, the strikes had already resumed in at least ten cities until late afternoon local time. These cities include parts of the capital Tehran, Tabriz, Khoy, Karaj, Shahriar, Fardis, Shahreza, Kermanshah, Isfahan and Sarab in Ardabil.

The first reports of today’s strikes came from the Fardis district of Karaj, 50km west of Tehran, where pictures show rows of shops closed during work hours. Similar protests are taking place in the shoe market of Tabriz. In Isfahan, the Shahreza bazaar and the mobile device markets were closed on Tuesday. Ardabil’s merchants have also joined the strike.

The merchants’ strike is taking place in tandem with a strike by Iran’s truck drivers, which entered its 17th day on Tuesday and has spread to more than 320 cities in all 31 provinces of Iran.

Update: In Tehran, the shops in Passaj-e Ala-e-din, Passaj-e Iran Mehr, and the furniture market have closed down in solidarity with the strike of merchants across the country.
In Isfahan, the shopkeepers of Charbagh have joined the strike. In Kermanshah, the shops of Daraii and Moalem street have closed their stores.
