Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani
Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary General Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani emphasized on the importance of confronting the Iranian regime’s meddling that is threatening international shipping lines and commerce in the Red Sea. These remarks came in an interview with the London-based Al Sharq Al Awsat on Friday.
The Iranian regime’s behavior is making regional states insecure and unstable, and this regime’s decision to export its extremism and religious/fundamentalist beliefs is a threat for its neighboring countries, Al Zayani added.
Speaking at the 27th annual American/Arab policymakers conference in Washington, Al Zayani said the Iranian regime is determined to export its revolution and fundamentalist ideas, threatening neighboring countries and violating all international accords and laws.
He went on to reiterate the Iranian regime’s role in supporting Houthi militias in Yemen through providing logistics, weapons and missiles to be fired at Saudi Arabian cities, adding more emphasis on the necessity to confront Iran’s malign influence is threatening international shipping lines and commerce in the Red Sea.
Concerns about the future of the Middle East and North Africa comes from challenges these regions are facing, Al Zayani underscored. Establishing a positive viewpoint to realize security, stability and peace over which regional countries agree on is very important, he said, emphasizing this viewpoint needs a comprehensive strategy based on mutual trust between these countries that are politically close to each other.
It is worth noting that the National American-Arab Relations Council hosts this annual conference, and the ambassadors of Arab states and the United States, former US ambassadors in Arab countries, researchers, business executives, and journalists participate.
On the Iranian regime’s meddling in the region, Al Sharq Al Awsat cited informed sources saying Tehran is busy focusing and planning on launching a new local paramilitary force in southern Syria.
These sources report that in the past few days 60 military personal in the Al Lejah camp in Deraa have undergone training supervised by officers from Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah for this very purpose.
In other news, Syrian opposition figures are also voicing concerns about the Iranian regime taking advantage of the international community’s focus on Idlib to establish more influence across other parts of Syria.
